Road safety operation leads to drug arrest, South Australia

Officers from Heavy Vehicle Enforcement Section located a large quantity of drugs after stopping a truck at a vehicle inspection station at Yamba yesterday.

In the early hours of Wednesday 19 May at truck was stopped on Sturt Highway during a vehicle inspection police located ten kilograms of methamphetamine in the trucks cabin behind the passenger seat.

The driver a 25-year-old man from Adelaide Plains and his passenger a 32-year-old woman from Two Wells were arrested and charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of controlled drug. They were both refused police bail and appeared in court where they were remanded in custody.

Superintendent Scott Denny, Officer in Charge of Murray Mallee Local Service Area said, 'SAPOL takes road safety very seriously and works closely with Traffic Services Branch to keep our roads safe.' I was surprised that a routine traffic operation resulted in such a large seizure of a harmful and dangerous drug. Illicit drugs cause immeasurable harm to our communities, so this is a very pleasing result.

Superintendent Denny said the drugs are valued at over $1 000,000 and the penalty for those caught trafficking large commercial quantities of controlled drugs face the prospect of life imprisonment and the forfeiture of their assets. In this case the drivers truck has already been impounded.
