Roads deteriorating because of continued wet weather

Flood plan SGB

People driving on roads in the Byron Shire are asked to take extra care this week with rain over the weekend, and continued rain this week making conditions challenging.

The road network is completely saturated.

"This means that road surfaces, both gravel and bitumen, are breaking up along with any short-term repairs we are doing," Council's Director Infrastructure Services, Phil Holloway said.

"There is so much damage to our road network and we are taking one step forward and three steps back because as soon as we repair a road, it rains and the potholes re-open and more appear," he said.

"When people see our jet-patcher teams out there filling the potholes in the rain as fast as they can and complain that this is a quick fix – we agree – it is a quick fix but it's all we can do at the moment.

"In the hinterland it's even worse and all we can do is ask people for understanding because this weather has been unrelenting," Mr Holloway said.

Council's scheduled program of road maintenance has again been delayed.

People can report road damage via Report It on Council's website.
