Robots Lend Nurses Helping Hand

Technical University of Denmark

Imagine a colleague who tirelessly zips around doing menial tasks for you, who doesn't need much of a break and who politely gives way if you are in a hurry. Well, that's exactly the type of colleague that DTU startup Yuman has built for the hospital sector to free up nurses' time.

"Nurses are really busy and need to be in five places at once. We did observations and conducted surveys in Danish hospitals and discovered that up to 1/3 of a nurse's day is spent walking," Yuman co-founder Sara Lopez Alaguero says.

While some walking is done making trips between patient rooms, a lot of the steps are accrued when fetching supplies that the nurses need to help a patient bedside. It is these walks Yuman is trying to do away with. "We want the nurses to be able to stay with the patient and whenever they need something, they can just call Buddy," she explains.
