Rockliff admits key health promise may not be met

Tasmanian Labor

The Liberal Government appear to have given up on a key 2014 election promise to make Tasmania the healthiest population in Australia by 2025.

Shadow Health Minister Anita Dow said Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff revealed the details in Budget Estimates on Monday morning.

"Today it was revealed that the Liberals have little hope their key 2014 election promise will be met," Ms Dow said.

"Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff today said the government's commitment to make Tasmanians the healthiest people by 2025 was ambitious, a real challenge and difficult to achieve, and it is now clear that the government have all but given up.

"This key 2014 promise aimed to make preventative health a priority, including lowering smoking rates and tackling obesity."

Ms Dow said while the Liberals promised to make Tasmania the healthiest population by 2025, they've done nothing to get us there.

"Yesterday new research revealed that Tasmania's elective surgery waitlist cost the state's economy $120 million in 2019/20 and in January this year Tasmania was labelled as the unhealthiest state in the country.

"And in November 2020, Minister Rockliff said his government were 100 per cent committed to meeting their target.

"Yet the Liberals have all but abandoned this key election pledge and it will be Tasmanians that have to face the consequences."
