Russian Arms Maker Kalashnikov Unveils NATO Rifle

Russian arms maker Kalashnikov, maker of the world's most widely used assault rifle, unveiled a shorter version of the AK-19, a 5.56×45mm NATO assault rifle aimed for the international market.

Some Russian reports claim that the Russian military also required the new assault rifle due to their acquisition of a significant amount of NATO standard ammunition from Ukraine.

"This latest version demonstrates a marked evolution from its 2019 base model. Significant changes have been made to the AK-19's design, most notably its shortened barrel and a dual-sided fire selector. Essentially, this is a brand new line of AK-19 series," Chief Designer Sergey Urzhumtsev said in a statement.

Having its roots in the 5.45mm AK-12, currently in service with the Russian military, the AK-19 boasts improvements across multiple facets. Enhanced shooting accuracy, ergonomic refinements, and adaptability for all-day use make it stand out. Moreover, its design evolution captures the insights from combat experience with the AK-12's third-generation model.

Kalashnikov has tailored the AK-19 for global buyers, with a compact size being a prominent feature. The weapon integrates the learned modifications from the AK-12, such as requests for a suppressor for noiseless firing and a front grip to better manage firing rate.

The launch event, set against the backdrop of the annual Military Correspondent Cup hosted by Kalashnikov for defense journalists, offered media representatives a hands-on experience. This took place in the Kalashnikov shooting center located within the Patriot park.

Aesthetically and functionally, the AK-19 differs with its polymer L-shaped stock, reimagined pistol grip, trigger guard, and a rotary diopter rear sight. It sets itself apart from the AK-12 with a birdcage-style flash suppressor, fitted with slots for a swift attachment of a sound suppressor.

Key Specifications of the upgraded AK-19:

  • Caliber: 5.56mm
  • Action: Gas-operated, long stroke gas piston, rotating bolt
  • Sighting Range: 400m
  • Rate of Fire: 700 rounds/min
  • Muzzle Velocity: 820 ± 20 m/sec
  • Weight (without magazine, accessories): 3.3kg
  • Magazine Capacity: 30 rounds
  • Machine Length: Ranges from 740 to 800mm in firing position; 560mm with stock folded; 895 to 955mm with PMS
  • Barrel Length: Reduced to 290mm (from the original AK-19's 415mm)

This development is seen as Kalashnikov's strategic move to tap into the global arms market with NATO-compatible weapons.
