Rye Pier Reopens In Time For Summer

VIC Premier

Major works to rebuild the first 309-metres of Rye Pier are now complete with visitors and locals being able to enjoy the popular pier in time for summer.

Funded as part of the Andrews Labor Government's $24 million Piers and Jetties economic stimulus package the upgrades include a wider Australian hardwood timber deck, new safety handrails and solar powered lighting.

In addition to the completed rebuild, further investment from the Labor Government will see the outer pier section rebuilt, completing the reconstruction of the pier.

This final stage of work will deliver an enhanced, stronger pier head and an additional low landing to enable closer access to the water, which will allow more boaters to berth.

Rye Pier was originally built in 1860, jutting out into the bay in the heart of Rye village. The popular landmark is loved for sightseeing, fishing and boating, featuring a low platform and seating for visitors.

The Pier is also an excellent day and night dive site offering beautiful underwater vistas and some of the warmest water in Port Phillip.

The final stage of works will get underway after the busy summer holidays and is expected to be completed in late 2023, subject to weather conditions.

These further works are part of an $18 million package for piers and jetties across Victoria from the Victorian Budget 2022/23, including works at Hampton, Rye, Flinders, McLoughlins Beach, Raymond Island, Lakes Entrance, Williamstown and Mornington.
