SA Police Member Honored for Preserving Mounted History

South Australia Police is proud to acknowledge the launch of Mounted, a new historical publication written by Brevet Sergeant Richard Miles, a serving member of SAPOL's Mounted Operations Unit.

Brevet Sergeant Miles has devoted significant time and research into capturing the stories, experiences and legacy of the South Australia Police Mounted Cadre (1951–1999), preserving an important chapter of SAPOL history for future generations.

The Honourable Frances Adamson AC Governor of South Australia, Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams APM LEM and the President of the Police Historical Society Bill Prior, joined invited guests at the Mounted Operations facility earlier today (Wednesday 11 March) to officially launch the book.

At a presentation following the book's launch, Deputy Commissioner Williams awarded Brevet Sergeant Miles with a Certificate of Commendation in recognition of the considerable time, research and dedication invested in preserving the distinguished history of the SA Mounted Cadre.

Deputy Commissioner Williams praised Brevet Sergeant Miles for his commitment to honouring the past while contributing meaningfully to the organisation's ongoing connection with its heritage.

"This work ensures the legacy of the Mounted Cadre lives on," she said.

"Brevet Sergeant Miles has given South Australians a valuable historical record, and SAPOL is extremely proud of his achievement."

Mounted draws upon first‑hand accounts from former cadre members, capturing the traditions, challenges, and character of mounted policing during the latter half of the 20th century. The publication also highlights the longstanding partnership between officers and the iconic police greys, whose presence has been part of SA policing for more than 185 years.

The book is now available through the South Australian Police Historical Society's online shop, with all proceeds from sales going back to the historical society, supporting the valuable work they do in preserving SAPOL history - Mounted – South Australian Police Historical Society
