Council this week endorsed the extension of the Safe Night Space for Women service at the first Ordinary Council Meeting of the year.

The Safe Night Space facility, which was scheduled to end on 30 May 2023, has been extended to 30 November 2023 to allow for the State Government's Murray Street crisis accommodation (which is due to commence in mid-2023) to be up and running.

The Safe Night Space has been an innovative program for the City. Operating from the Rod Evans Centre, it provides a place for women to rest, access basic facilities, seek support and connect to other services in a safe and secure environment at night. Over the twenty months of operation from 31 May 2021 to 31 January 2023, the Safe Night Space has sheltered 709 individuals for a cumulative 7,966 instances of support.

Following cessation of the Safe Night Space, the Rod Evans Centre will return to its use as a community centre.
