Safe path network on track for Broome community

  • Stage 1 of Broome's Conti Foreshore shared path project now completed
  • Stage 2 connecting Town Beach to Carnarvon Street near Matso's Brewery to be constructed in 2021-22
  • Project delivered with $616,070 joint investment from WA Bicycle Network Grants Program and Shire of Broome
  • Part of McGowan Government's $220 million program to expand cycling and pedestrian infrastructure by more than 150km
  • Construction has recently finished on Stage 1 of the Conti Foreshore shared path project providing a high-quality shared path along one of Broome's most famous foreshores.

The Shire of Broome secured $308,035 through the Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) Grants Program and matched the funds to deliver 1.3 kilometres of safe shared path from Town Beach to Carnarvon Street near Matso's Brewery.

The recently completed Stage 1 works have resulted in the construction of a 422-metre-long, 3-metre-wide path from Town Beach to Guy Street.

Stage 2 will be constructed in 2021-22, adding a further 900 metres of path along Conti Foreshore from Guy Street to Matso's Brewery.

The WABN Grants Program assists local governments with the planning, design, construction and activation of bicycle infrastructure, with $7.6 million in grants allocated to 51 local governments in the latest round of funding announced in January 2021.

The Conti Foreshore shared path project is one of 59 bicycle infrastructure projects delivered through the WABN Grants Program in 2020-21.

It is part of the McGowan Government's record $220 million investment, over four years, in infrastructure and supporting initiatives to encourage more people to walk and ride.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Our Government's record investment in walking and cycling infrastructure has created a high-quality and safe shared path for people choosing to ride and walk in Broome.

"Once completed, the Conti Foreshore shared path project will provide locals and visitors with another option to travel from Roebuck Bay Caravan Park and Town Beach straight through to Matso's Brewery.

"This project is another example of how the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program enables the McGowan Government to collaborate with local governments to provide safe, convenient and enjoyable bicycle infrastructure across Western Australia."

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"Town Beach and Matso Brewery are iconic Broome locations and Roebuck Bay Caravan Park is a popular spot for locals and tourists.

"This shared path will provide a new transport option linking three key areas for people to cycle and walk.

"I'm proud to be a part of a McGowan Government that delivers for our regions."
