Safe Sex Reminder For Western Australian School Leavers

As teenagers across WA begin to celebrate the end of exams at annual Leavers events (24-27 November), WA Health's sexual health experts are reminding them to stay safe.

According to the STI and BBV 2024 Annual Report, young people continue to bear the greatest burden of sexually transmissible infections in WA.

Many infections are symptom-free, which means they can go undetected and, if untreated, may lead to serious health complications.

WA Health's Sexual Health and Blood-borne Virus Program Manager, Lisa Bastian encouraged leavers to be prepared and pack condoms and water-based lubricant.

"Condoms are the most effective protection against STIs, so if you have unprotected sex, it's vital you see a doctor or clinic for testing," she said.

"Many STIs don't show symptoms but are often easily treated when caught early - so don't delay testing."

Safety tips for young people heading to Leavers:

  • Use condoms with water-based lubricant consistently and correctly — they remain the best safeguard against STIs.
  • Test early and regularly — testing is simple and protects both you and your partner(s).
  • Talk openly with partners about consent, contraception and sexual health.
  • Be aware of risks — alcohol and drugs can impair judgement and increase risk-taking.

While Leavers is a time to relax, catch up with mates and celebrate the end of school, festivities should not come at the expense of health and safety.

"Parents are encouraged to talk with their teenagers about making informed decisions and how these choices may be affected when celebrating, particularly if alcohol or other drugs are involved," Ms Bastian said.

The Department of Health has partnered with the Western Australian Aids Council (WAAC) to give out condoms at Leavers with this year's condom wallet chosen as the winning design from a social media competition.
