A recent assessment of Flinders Pier has revealed that the timber inner section of the pier will need to be rebuilt rather than repaired.
In the process of restoring the timber sections of Flinders Pier, it was found that the crossheads, beams and piles of the inner section were further deteriorated than a previous inspection report indicated.
This discovery means the pier cannot be repaired and the timber inner section will need to be replaced.
The expanded scope of the restoration means that it will not be possible to rebuild the full length of the pier.
To ensure community safety, all the old timber piles have been removed.
Balustrading will be installed along the edge of the concrete pier where the water is shallow and there is a risk of injury from falling into the water.
Some of the timber inner section will be rebuilt and we expect to be able to open the repaired section to the community once works are finished.
There are also repairs to stabilise the pier's inner lower landings which will be completed this month.

Work to repair Flinders Pier began late last year.
The project's goal is to take a sustainable, long-term approach to managing the pier to deliver the best outcome now and for many years to come.
The full 327-metre length of Flinders concrete pier remains open to the community while the timber inner section is closed for construction and safety.
