Scotland Island Wharf upgrades

More than 3,800 square metres of additional Crown waterway has been reserved by the NSW Government to support a $2.5 million upgrade of boating facilities at Scotland Island on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment – Crown Lands has reserved 1,892 square metres of Crown waterway at Bells Wharf and 1,971 square metres of waterway at Carols Wharf to accommodate wharf upgrades.

The project will include 32 moorings at Bells Wharf and Carols Wharf, boat tie-up facilities, new ferry shelters, a wider ferry boarding area and improved access for commuters, including people with disabilities.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the project would improve access to the island for residents and visitors.

"Scotland Island is a unique community that's only accessible by water, which means that quality boat facilities are essential to help residents come and go," Mr Stokes said.

"This $2.5 million investment for improving boat berthing facilities is being jointly funded by the NSW Government and Northern Beaches Council and will be welcomed by those who use the waterway for their daily transport requirements."

Northern Beaches Council is the proponent for the wharf upgrades and CEO Ray Brownlee said it would provide much-needed infrastructure to a community that relies on the wharves.

"This is a great project that will provide safer access to public transport and provide additional facilities for private commuter and recreational boating," Mr Brownlee said.

"We began work on the project in December 2020 and hope to have it completed by February 2022, weather permitting."
