Search and rescue at Weipa

A search and rescue operation is underway in Far North Queensland for a man whose boat failed to return to Rocky Point in Weipa last night (Sunday May 22).

Initial investigations indicate a 62-year-old man who was sailing a four-metre tinnie in Albatross Bay has failed to return to Rocky Point when expected.

The Umagico man was reported missing at approximately 10pm, after he had made no contact with anyone.

Thursday Island Water Police are co-ordinating the search and rescue operation, with aerial assets including a fixed-wing aircraft to assist in the search.

Far North Police urge anyone with information regarding the man’s whereabouts, or who may have seen a vessel in the waters off Weipa to come forward.
