Search and rescue, Mabuiag Island

The search and rescue operation for a 68-year-old woman, missing from a vessel which overturned near Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait yesterday, is continuing.

The vessel was approximately three nautical miles off the southeast end of the Island when an emergency beacon was activated around 2pm on June 8.

Police and emergency services commenced a wide-ranging surface and aerial search, involving multiple aircraft and vessels, with the rescue helicopter locating two people in the water at approximately 3.30pm yesterday afternoon.

A 34-year-old male and a 22-year-old female were transported to Thursday Island Hospital for treatment.

The search continues for the third missing female passenger.

Police hold serious concerns for her welfare.

Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.

Boaties and other recreational water users are asked to immediately report any sightings to police.
