Seniors & Disability Hours introduced for Darwin Libraries

A "Seniors & Disability Hours" access arrangement will be instigated at all City of Darwin Libraries from Monday.

City of Darwin CEO Scott Waters said Council was taking a proactive approach to ensure older and vulnerable library patrons were being looked after during the COVID-19 response.

"Senior & Disability Hours" will be held on weekdays between 9am and 11am where only older Darwin residents and people with disabilities would be able to access libraries if they can show a relevant government-issued seniors or disability card.

City of Darwin Libraries will be closed to undertake additional surface cleaning between 11am and midday after which they would be open for use by the general public between midday and close of business. The arrangements will remain in place until further notice.

Council of the Aging NT CEO Sue Shearer endorsed the Council action stating it will be welcomed by Darwin seniors.

"I think it's a wonderful initiative," Mrs Shearer said.

Mr Waters said City of Darwin library services would also be extending all library book loan periods for 6 weeks, with automatic renewals for another 6 weeks if needed.

He said other interim library change measures would include a cancellation to all library programs including Storytime and STEAM programs until further notice.

Mr Waters reminded residents that library services offer extensive access to online books, ebooks and audio books for all ages. Community members can establish a library membership online without needing to physically attend a library.
