Paving the way for change and growth in an environment where precision and adaptability are paramount, Group Captain Phillip Godfrey has played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of future leaders through the transformation of senior officer career management.
In recognition of his achievements as Director Senior Officer Management Air Force, Group Captain Godfrey was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross. His citation speaks of how his unwavering commitment has strengthened senior leader career pathways, enhanced talent development and contributed to greater overall force effectiveness.
Reflecting on the award, Group Captain Godfrey spoke of his long and diverse career in Air Force.
"This is an absolute honour - it is the icing on the cake of what has been an amazing 38‑year career," he said.
Joining Air Force as a trainee cook, he went on to build a distinguished career spanning operations, training, personnel management and command.
After a deployment to East Timor, he rose through the senior enlisted ranks before commissioning in 2007 as a personnel capability officer.

From that point, Group Captain Godfrey's career expanded across multiple Air Force units, included several overseas deployments and featured notable leadership appointments such as Commanding Officer 27 Squadron and Senior ADF Officer at RAAF Base Townsville.
Group Captain Godfrey said he has dedicated a significant portion of his career to Air Force career management.
"Having spent many years in career management as an enlisted member and an officer, I have witnessed the Air Force progress through significant periods of change - creating new opportunities to support the careers of aviators across all ranks," he said.
Group Captain Godfrey praised the team of dedicated aviators who worked together to transform the process for senior officer management and selection and progression.
"This award is not just for me but the entire team who have worked behind the scenes and supported me," he said.
Group Captain Godfrey's dedication, humility and passion for developing people have left a lasting mark on senior officer selection and development. His work not only shaped today's leaders but set the foundation for generations to come.
