Goulburn Regional Art Gallery will treat visitors to a visual feast with a wall mural on display in the Goulburn civic centre for three years thanks to the Albanese Labor Government's Sharing the National Collection program.

Leading Australian contemporary artist Mikala Dwyer's [wall painting] 2020, which is currently on display at the National Gallery of Australia has been adapted for the exterior wall of the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery.

Dwyer has been developing a career in installation and sculptural work since the 1980's. Large in scale and vivid in colour, visitors to Goulburn will be able to experience the electric work in the town's centre.

Minister for the Arts, Tony Burke, said displaying the work in a public space makes it accessible for art enthusiasts and those just passing by.

"Our Sharing the National Collection program has given regional audiences a chance to see things that normally don't make it out beyond our major cities.

"The national collection belongs to the entire nation, not just to Canberra."

Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain said the Goulburn community will have the unique opportunity to enjoy a significant piece in the town's centre.

"This program is a great way to share the national collection with regional Australia.

"The stunning adaptation of Mikala Dwyer's work will be a great addition to the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and offer locals and visitors another reason to visit the gallery.

Director of the National Gallery, Dr Nick Mitzevich, said the program was continuing to be a collaborative success with regional galleries.

"This exciting partnership with Goulburn Regional Art Gallery reflects the National Gallery's commitment to sharing powerful contemporary art with communities across Australia."

"Mikala Dwyer is one of Australia's leading contemporary artists, and this vibrant mural will transform a familiar public space into a site of imagination and wonder, thanks to the Sharing the National Collection program."

Director of Goulburn Regional Art Gallery, Yvette Dal Pozzo, said the mural would entice audiences to the gallery.

"We are thrilled to borrow an incredibly impactful work from the National Gallery's collection by internationally recognised artist Mikala Dwyer. Mikala is a leading voice in Australian art, best known for her boundary-pushing works that explore our relationship with space, material and form.

"Positioned at the entrance to the Gallery, the installation will be a major drawcard for both our local community and visiting audiences, as a vibrant and dynamic expression of contemporary art."

Sharing the National Collection is part of Revive, Australia's National Cultural Policy.

The program has provided $11.8 million over four years to fund the costs of transporting, installing and insuring works in the national art collection so that they can be seen right across the country.
