Work to replace streetlights across Shellharbour City with more energy-efficient LED alternatives is now complete.
The initiative is expected to save about $165,000 annually in energy costs and reduce Council's annual greenhouse gas emissions by over 800 tCO2 per annum. This is equivalent to taking 172 average-sized cars off the road per year.
In June last year, Council was awarded $242,000 in grant funding under The Office of Environment and Heritage's Accelerated Lighting Upgrade Program.
Council has also invested $645,000 into the project, which has seen the replacement of 2279 streetlights.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said that the lighting upgrade was a fantastic initiative for Council to significantly reduce local carbon emissions, as well as its annual lighting costs.
"It is expected that Council will save approximately $165,000 every year which is a great result for our community. LED lights also have a much longer lifespan, resulting in reduced maintenance costs," Cr Saliba said.
"By reducing the money spent on energy bills for city lighting, Council will be able to redirect savings to other important projects,"
"LED lighting has also resulted in brighter and better quality light distribution to improve community safety in public areas," she said.
