Update On Hampton Park Waste Transfer Station Outcome

Council acknowledges the recent communication from Veolia, that their proposal for a waste transfer station in Hampton Park has now ceased.

Mayor Cr Stefan Koomen said he acknowledged the tremendous advocacy work of the community.

"I know that there were many locals who dedicated their time to ensuring the voices of the Hampton Park community were well and truly heard," said Cr Koomen.

"Council must now continue to focus on meeting the needs of our growing city. With a large and diverse population, we have a responsibility to ensure our community has a sustainable waste option now and into the future," said Cr Koomen.

"Casey will continue to work with the South-Eastern Metropolitan Advanced Waste Processing (SEMAWP) partnership to progress the waste-to-energy project, which remains a key component of long-term waste planning for the South-East," said Cr Koomen.

"As the Hampton Park Landfill approaches closure, Council must work closely with other councils in the region to ensure waste disposal services remain reliable for Casey residents," said Cr Koomen.

"While this is a complex issue, Council is committed to planning responsibly and working with our partners to deliver long term waste solutions for our growing community," said Cr Koomen.

"Councillors are focused on ensuring decisions about this site are made with the community's interests in mind," said Cr Koomen.

In its decision, VCAT confirmed that Council's planning permit and review process was not called into question. VCAT also referred to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) confirming it had consented to the issuing of a planning permit, subject to conditions being met.

With VCAT upholding the rejection of the development licence, the planning permit issued by Council now becomes redundant as it can't be implemented. The planning permit will expire if development does not commence before 4 November 2026. Veolia can apply for an extension to their permit, however they would require Council approval.

Councillors will be notified of any applications to extend or change the permit.
