Shoal Bay Open Day 2025: Behind-the-Scenes Peek

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is excited to welcome the community to the 2025 Shoal Bay Open Day, offering a rare opportunity to explore behind the scenes at the Northern Territory's largest waste management and resource recovery facility. This free, family-friendly event is happening on Sunday 17 August from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility.

Shoal Bay processes over 200,000 tonnes of waste and recyclable materials every year. The Open Day is a chance to see first-hand how this essential service works, from state-of-the-art waste processing and environmental protection initiatives to the daily operations that keep our city clean and sustainable.

Event highlights include 20-minute guided bus tours running every half hour throughout the morning, no booking is required, so just turn up early to secure your spot! There'll also be the chance to visit our Education Centre, where you can learn about reducing household waste and minimising recycling contamination.

Of course, no Open Day would be complete without coffee and a free sausage sizzle, and a visit to the ever-popular Reviva Reuse Shop, where you're bound to find a hidden treasure or two.

"Shoal Bay plays a critical role in managing Darwin's waste and recovering valuable resources," said Nick Fewster, Executive Manager Environment and Waste Services. "This Open Day is a great opportunity for the community to see how we're improving environmental outcomes through innovation, education, and infrastructure like the landfill gas to energy plant, the leachate treatment plant and new Stage 2 facility."

This is a unique opportunity to explore the vital work being done at Shoal Bay, ask questions, and discover how each of us can help reduce our waste and environmental impact.
