Bayside Council will examine the feasibility of establishing a permanent Bayside Shorebird Protection Zone on the Botany Bay foreshore following a resolution at the Council Meeting on Wednesday 26 November 2025.
Bayside Council's shorebird public education programs have increased local understanding of shorebirds and and their habitats along the foreshore.
However, education alone is not enough. The Far Eastern Curlew - the world's largest migratory shorebird and listed as critically endangered under the EPBC Act 1999 - has seen its local population decline and Bayside risks losing this iconic species from our shores altogether.
Establishing a Bayside Shorebird Protection Zone will protect vital habitat, support threatened species recovery and align Bayside Council with Australia's international commitments to protect migratory birds.
