Our former Chancellor, opera singer Sir Thomas Allen, has been awarded the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the world of classical music.
Global honour
The Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award is one of the most prestigious accolades in classical music, presented annually to an individual whose career has made a transformative impact on the industry.
Sir Thomas, born in Seaham Harbour just a few miles from Durham, has been hailed as one of the greatest British lyric baritones of the past century.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Sir Thomas has captivated audiences around the world. He has performed more than 50 roles at the Royal Opera House and making his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York over 40 years ago.
His life story is famously said to have inspired the hit musical and film Billy Elliot.
Celebrating a decade of service to Durham
In addition to his international musical acclaim, Sir Thomas served as our Chancellor for over a decade (2012 to 2022), presiding over countless graduation ceremonies and inspiring thousands of students.
During his tenure, he performed alongside students at high-profile events, including a memorable concert for the then Prince of Wales – now King Charles III – at Durham Cathedral.
Professor Karen O'Brien, our Vice-Chancellor and Warden, said: "Sir Thomas is a tremendous ambassador for Durham, both for the University and his home county, and continues to inspire our students, staff and wider community.
"He is exceptionally deserving of this major recognition of his global contribution to classical music."
A lasting legacy
To honour Sir Thomas's exceptional service, we have dedicated a state-of-the-art Steinway Spirio piano in his name. We established the Sir Thomas Allen Appeal Fund, supporting scholarships, bursaries, and our vision to become an All-Steinway School.
The Lifetime Achievement award stands as a testament to Sir Thomas's unparalleled talent and his lasting impact on the global musical stage.
