Victoria Police was working long after the final football siren sounded removing 243 drink and 265 drug drivers from our roads as part of Operation Scoreboard.
The four day road safety focus for the grand final long weekend saw police detect 8702 traffic offences and 746 crime offences throughout the state.
Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said it was disappointing to see so many people make the conscious decision to drink or take drugs and get behind the wheel of a car.
"Everyone wants to have a good time on the footy grand final weekend, but unfortunately due to poor choices some people were either hit with a fine, lost demerits or had their car impounded," AC Stephen Leane.
"Saying this, the majority of people did the right thing and were able to enjoy the weekend for all it had to offer."
"But we must remember the families and extended communities of the two people who lost their lives."
A 21-year-old male from Hampton Park and a 19-year-old female from Ferntree Gully both died in a two car crash that occurred in Oakleigh East on Sunday, 29 September 2019.
General offences detected during the operation include:
• 161 disqualified/suspended drivers
• 280 unlicensed drivers
• 782 unregistered vehicles
• 2780 speeding offences
• 569 mobile phone offences
• 569 disobey signs/signals
• 126 vehicle impounds
• 226 seat belt offences
Police performed 110,209 preliminary breath tests and 3,161 drug tests over the four days of detection.
Operation Scoreboard was a state-wide operation and ran from 12.01am Thursday 26 September to 11.59pm Sunday 29 September, 2019.
