A motorist has died in a collision in Buangor, becoming the sixth life lost on Victorian roads this weekend.
Emergency services were called to reports a car had gone onto the wrong side of the Western Highway and struck another vehicle about 10.55am.
The driver of that car, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A female passenger from that vehicle was flown to hospital with serious injuries.
This latest incident means police have responded to eight serious collisions resulting in six deaths and four life-threatening injuries since Friday evening.
Three people from the same vehicle were killed while a fourth occupant is fighting for life following a collision at Bolinda earlier today.
Last night there was a collision involving two motorcycle and two vehicles on the Western Freeway at Grangefields which left one the riders deceased while the other remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Two other motorcyclists sustained critical injuries in separate collisions in Cranbourne and Rye on the same evening.
This follows the death of a 16-year-old boy when he was struck by a ute in Bentleigh on Friday night and an E-Bike rider who was critically injured after colliding with a pedestrian in Geelong.
Road Policing Command Superintendent Justin Goldsmith said while investigations were still underway into the weekend collisions many of them were a result of a single act of non-compliance or inattention.
"It's no secret that ultimately serious collisions occur due to a lack of respect for the responsibility that comes with being a road user," Superintendent Goldsmith said.
"Every life lost is one too many but what we have seen this weekend has been devastating and there are many families whose lives have changed forever as a result of the trauma on our roads."
Several of the serious and fatal collisions from this weekend occurred in country and regional areas and with more drivers than normal expected on country roads due to the school holidays police are urging people to drive responsibly and to the conditions.
"There has been 156 lives lost on our roads this year, 15 more than the same time last year,"
"We've also seen more than half of those lives lost be country drivers.
"Country people die on country roads.
"People living locally shouldn't fool themselves into thinking road trauma doesn't happen to them"
Investigations into the Buangor collision and the other serious crashes this weekend remain ongoing.
