Skating competition and festival to put on stunning show in Ballarat

Ballarat's major skate park is set to come alive in spectacular fashion this weekend.

The YMCA Action Sports Skate Park Leagues will come to Ballarat on Saturday 4 February, taking over the Len T Fraser Skate Park on Main Road.

It will be held in conjunction with SPU-Fest (referring to Skate Park Users); a youth festival designed to complement the skating competition.

SPU-Fest has been organised by the City of Ballarat youth services team, in consultation with the youth volunteers to deliver the event.

The event and competition are free for all to enter.

It will feature a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and didgeridoo performance, live music by artists Surfe and Raro, a horizontal inflatable bungee jump, youth facilitated workshops in street art designs on skate decks, slime and badgemaking workshops, and facepainting. Hot food and drink options will also be available for purchase on the day.

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Des Hudson said the event promised to be a great day out for young people and a way to promote positive skate park culture.

"We expect Len T Fraser Skate Park to be an absolute hive of activity on the day and it promises to be a great day out for the family," Cr Hudson said.

"Some of the competitors are certain to put on a sensational show, whether it is on the scooter, BMX or skateboard. It really is going to be a great spectacle.

"All abilities can enter and we would love to see Ballarat people put their hands up and give it a shot."

The Skate Parks League travels all around Australia over summer, with the Ballarat leg forming part of the western Victorian regional series.

It is the first time since 2017 that the Skate Park League competition has been held in Ballarat.

Holding the event in Ballarat aligns with goal 2 of the City of Ballarat Council Plan 2021-2025: A healthy, connected and inclusive community.

It also aligns the City of Ballarat Youth Strategy 2022-2026 Focus Area 1: Health and Wellbeing, physical health priority.

It will be held from 11am-4pm on Saturday 4 February.
