Southern Cross is the latest university to offer quicker and cheaper degrees by offering up to a full year off a degree for TAFE students.
This is a fantastic announcement from Southern Cross University.
It's what breaking down the artificial barrier between TAFE and university looks like.
It will save students time and money.
This will take one year off their degree and save up to $17,000.
It will make it quicker, cheaper and easier to get the skills and qualifications people need. And that Australia needs.
For people who do a Free TAFE course and then go on to university, this can mean the first year of their degree is effectively free.
I want more universities to do this.
That is why the ATEC is developing a national credit recognition framework to help more places do this.
The initial Southern Cross University pathways will cover eight degrees in areas including tourism, hotel management, science, IT, business, nursing and education.
Southern Cross joins the University of Canberra and Western Sydney University as a pace setter here.
The University of Canberra is saving students up to $17,000 by taking one year off a degree if they have a relevant TAFE qualification in seven areas, including nursing, early childhood education and care and graphic design.
Western Sydney University is saving students up to $18,000 by reducing the length of a degree for students with a relevant qualification in areas including nursing, construction and IT.
To encourage more universities and TAFEs to work together, the ATEC will be able to allocate more future student places to universities that offer these sorts of credit for TAFE qualifications.
