The appointment of a dedicated RSPCA WA inspector to the Kimberley has been welcomed by the State Government, which has significantly boosted funding to the respected animal welfare organisation to enable this appointment.
Inspector Wayne Moroney is undertaking training and will commence in the Broome-based position next month, working throughout the vast region responding to, and helping prevent animal cruelty to companion animals.
The appointment is the result of a McGowan Government commitment to double funding to the RSPCA WA, enhancing animal welfare outcomes across the State.
Inspector Moroney will join RSPCA WA's network of 11 on-the-road inspectors operating across the State in Perth, Bunbury, Geraldton, Albany, and Kalgoorlie.
The inspectors are charged with upholding the Animal Welfare Act 2002.
The funding commitment is part of the McGowan Government's action to strengthen animal welfare capability, following an extensive review of the State's animal welfare system.
As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"The appointment will satisfy a long-held need in the Kimberley for an RSPCA WA inspector to rescue and protect companion animals, as well as educate their owners about appropriate care for these important members of our families and communities.
"There is a very active animal welfare community in Broome, and this will support their good work."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"I welcome the appointment of Inspector Moroney, who is a Broome local with extensive experience in both law enforcement and community capacity building.
"RSPCA WA inspectors play an important role working with individuals, organisations and communities to take good care of animals, which provide invaluable wellbeing support to their human owners."
