Statement about RV Investigator Indian Ocean voyage

CSIRO has taken the difficult decision to suspend the current voyage of the research vessel (RV) Investigator as a precautionary measure to undertake a review of some of the ship's high-pressure compression equipment. There are no immediate safety concerns, however, ensuring all equipment on board is assured to the highest safety standards is a priority.

The ship was partway through a 45-day expedition investigating the biodiversity the Indian Ocean Territories and is being led by Museums Victoria in partnership with Parks Australia, Bush Blitz, CSIRO and a number of museums and universities.

The RV Investigator is travelling to a suitable port in coming days and the planned voyage will be rescheduled as soon as it is able to.

The ship has travelled from Darwin to Christmas Island where over recent days it has undertaken a marine biodiversity survey of the area as well as collecting oceanographic measurements, and mapping the seafloor.

On its return journey, the ship will collect and contribute atmospheric data to the Global Atmosphere Watch as well as continuing the collection of oceanographic measurements and map the seafloor.
