The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, made the following statement:
"Today marks the start of German Heritage Month, a time when we celebrate the contributions of people of Germanic descent to Canada.
Every day, more than 3 million people of German origin make our country stronger, contributing to its rich diversity. Representing around eight percent of the Canadian population, it is one of our largest European communities.
The first immigrants of Germanic origin came to Canada from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The first wave of immigration to our country dates back to the 18th century. Since then, these various communities have continued to promote their cultures, whether through Goethe Institutes, community Samstagsschulen, Saturday schools meant to teach the language, or German Studies departments.
Today, the descendants of these immigrants, as well as German newcomers, shine in every field, including science, technology, politics, the arts and entrepreneurship. German cultures continue to be celebrated and traditions like Oktoberfest enrich Canada's heritage.
Happy German Heritage Month and Oktoberfest to everyone who celebrates it!
Prost!
