The Finocchiaro CLP Government welcomes the federal government's announcement of a $7.2 million package to assist in the response to the diphtheria outbreak.
As part of the package, $5.2 million will go to the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre to provide a surge workforce to administer booster vaccinations and treatments, and to procure additional vaccines and antibiotics.
The National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre brings world-class expertise in emergency health responses, and their assistance with additional workforce and vaccines will strengthen the Territory's response.
The remaining $2 million investment in culturally safe communications through Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory will help ensure remote communities continue to receive trusted health information.
This will build on the work NT Health has already done in informing and raising awareness in remote communities and supporting Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services with vaccinations.
A strong partnership approach is critical as we respond to the diphtheria outbreak across the Territory.
Getting vaccinated is the most effective way to prevent serious illness and reduce the spread of diphtheria.
NT Health, alongside community partners, is rolling out a staged Territory-wide vaccination response prioritising vulnerable Territorians and communities most at risk.
Vaccination is free under the National Immunisation Program for people under 20 years of age. Children are routinely vaccinated against diphtheria at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 18 months, 4 years and 12 years.
Parents should check their child's vaccination status with their health care provider to make sure they are up to date with the NT immunisation schedule.
Adults should get a booster dose every 10 years with Aboriginal Territorians and frontline workers every 5 years.
Territorians can get the vaccine at their local GP, Aboriginal health clinic, remote community clinic, community care centres, and participating pharmacies.
