Statement on International Day of Peace 22 September

Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:

"This week, Canada joined the world at the United Nations General Assembly to accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda and toward its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"At the halfway mark to 2030, global progress toward the SDGs is of critical concern. Now is the time for governments, civil society and communities to come together to make meaningful progress. The theme of this year's International Day of Peace, Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals, drives home the crucial message that peace is something we build together through sustained commitment, concerted effort and collaborative action.

"Canada believes that everyone has the right to life, liberty and security and the right to live in societies that respect their diversity. Canada supports women peacebuilders, human rights defenders and the powerful feminist movements that rally behind them. Despite the increasing threat of attacks and reprisals, they remain dedicated to pushing for change and advancing inclusive peace.

"Canada is also firm in our commitment to protect the safety, health and well-being of children whose lives are affected by conflict. That's why we work with partners to promote and implement the Vancouver Principles on Peacekeeping and the Prevention of the Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers.

"As we met with our international counterparts about the SDGs this week, we discussed Canada's actions and ambitions to build a greener, safer and more inclusive future. The interconnected nature of the SDGs makes it clear that our actions to promote more peaceful societies will also help us strengthen global health, take effective climate action, foster gender equality, and more.

"This year marks the milestone 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Despite the immense challenges we face stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and rising conflict, the declaration remains pivotal proof that the world can come together to stand up for dignity, freedom and justice for people everywhere.

"Today, as the world works together to drive progress on the SDGs forward with renewed urgency, promoting peace and standing up for human rights must remain central to our approach. By working to advance dignity and respect, inclusion and security, we continue to strive for lasting peace and a world that leaves no one behind."
