Even during the Christmas holidays the unexpected can happen, and key Corangamite Shire staff will be on call for emergencies while Council offices and depots are closed for the festive season.

The Civic Centre and some services will close over the Christmas and New Year period but residents with urgent issues can call Council on 5593 7100 to be connected to an on-call officer.

Corangamite Shire Mayor Ruth Gstrein wished residents a safe and prosperous festive period.

"On behalf of my fellow Councillors and Council staff I would like to wish all residents a happy and safe Christmas and New Year," Cr Gstrein said.

"The summer holidays are a great opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones. Don't forget our pools are great places to get together and socialise or enjoy the various activities.

"Water can be fun but it can also be dangerous as we saw during the floods in October. The weather bureau says there's an above average chance of more flooding over summer so remember not to drive through flood waters.

"Going from one extreme to the other, Corangamite is also a fire prone area so we will still need to be conscious of possible grassfires as things dry out over summer.

"If there is an emergency, watch Council's Facebook page and website for information and updates.

"Download the VicEmergency app to get emergency notifications on your phone and, if the worst does happen, keep an eye on www.emergency.vic.gov.au for the latest updates."

Cr Gstrein said the break would be a good opportunity for Councillors and staff to recharge after a challenging but productive year.

"We're looking forward to coming back reinvigorated to keep advocating strongly for the Shire and delivering quality services for Corangamite residents."

Council offices will close at 1 pm on Thursday 22 December and re-open at 8:30 am on Tuesday 3 January 2023.
