Storms Hit Many, Wet Weather in NSW

BOM
Hello, Miriam at the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast for tomorrow, Thursday, the 11th of December.

Taking a look at tomorrow's weather map, we can see low-pressure troughs still lingering across the country, stretching from inland parts of Western Australia through central and South Australia and down into New South Wales. Thunderstorms are on the forecast once again across much of the west, north and east of the country tomorrow, with some wetter weather on the way for New South Wales. In the south-east, a high-pressure system is moving through, bringing more settled conditions to Tasmania, parts of Victoria and South Australia.

Let's take a state-by-state look at the forecast for tomorrow, starting with Queensland.

In Queensland, there's a chance of morning fog across parts of the south-east, then a generally warm day - slightly milder in the south-east but still hot across the inland areas. Humidity may linger along the coast. Sunshine will start the day, but cloud will build through the afternoon and evening, especially across western, inland and southern parts of the state. These areas could see thunderstorms, mostly dry across central and northern regions, with some rain possible in the Maranoa and Warrego and parts of the southern Darling Downs. Brisbane should see a mostly dry and sunny day with a top of 29 °C.

In New South Wales, the impacts of low-pressure troughs will continue across inland areas and along the east coast. Thunderstorms are a risk across much of the state, particularly the north, central and eastern areas. Severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of the western slopes and central east coast, with heavy rainfall the main concern, along with the possibility of damaging winds and large hail. Wetter conditions will shift the pattern for much of the state. A dedicated Severe Weather Update video is available with more details. Milder conditions are expected along the east coast, while heat lingers inland. Sydney is forecast for a shower or two, a possible thunderstorm and a top of 23 °C. In Canberra, showers and a possible thunderstorm are expected with a top of 25 °C.

In Victoria, fairly settled conditions are expected. There is a chance of morning fog across Gippsland, followed by a generally sunny day. A bit more cloud is expected through the north-east, with a chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Melbourne will see a mostly sunny day with a top of 22 °C.

In Tasmania, a ridge of high pressure is bringing very settled conditions. Patchy morning fog and the chance of frost across inland areas will be followed by a dry and sunny day, with a bit more cloud in the south-west. Hobart is heading for a mostly sunny day and a top of 21 °C.

In South Australia, a hot to very hot day lies ahead. Severe-intensity heatwaves will affect the north, with temperatures in the low to mid-40s. Dry thunderstorms may push down along the northern border, possibly bringing gusty winds. Thunderstorms may also occur across central and eastern areas, though they are not expected to impact Adelaide. Adelaide will see a sunny day with a top of 32 °C.

In Western Australia, thunderstorms are forecast across much of the northern, inland and south-west areas - mostly dry and potentially gusty, with little rainfall except in the northern Kimberley. Only the west coast and far south-east are likely to remain storm-free. Very hot conditions will continue, with heatwaves inland and temperatures in the southern interior reaching the high 30s to around 40 °C. Perth is heading for a sunny day with a top of 31 °C.

In the Northern Territory, thunderstorms are a risk almost everywhere except the Arnhem and Carpentaria districts in the north-east. Most storms will be dry but could be gusty. Some rain is possible across the western Top End and Gregory districts. Severe heatwaves continue across central Australia, with very high temperatures. Darwin will have partly cloudy skies, a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm, and a top of 34 °C.
