Streetscape upgrades revitalising Lalor and Thomastown

Businesses in Lalor and Thomastown are abuzz with streetscape upgrades breathing new life into the popular shopping precincts.

Council is refreshing the streetscapes to boost the vitality of the shopping centres and transforming them into inviting and active community spaces.

David Street and May Road in Lalor are being modernised with new paving, safer walkways, updated road access for improved traffic flow and lush new landscaping.

In Thomastown, the streetscape is currently being upgraded between Highlands and Pleasant Roads. Pedestrian crossings, new paving, seats, bike racks and bins, and a public space at the war memorial site opposite Thomastown Primary School are being installed to encourage residents to shop locally and enjoy the new social spaces.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson visited Lalor and Thomastown shopping precincts recently to meet local traders.

"After a tough year for businesses, it's never been more important to support our hard-working local traders by improving the vitality of our shopping precincts," Ms Wilson said.

"Our streetscape works are creating open, inviting and safe spaces that make shopping local easier and more enjoyable."

Paul Tsardakis, owner of Lalor Party Supplies, has seen the area evolve in his 48 years at Lalor Shopping Centre.

"What I love most about this strip is its great culture. It's become a gathering place for friends, enjoying the cafés, food and shops together," said Mr Tsardakis.

"The upgrades from Council are really appreciated. It's fantastic to see the street looking fresh and inviting for years to come."

The Lalor and Thomastown streetscape upgrades are delivered by the City of Whittlesea with the support of the Victorian and Australian Governments.

Keep up to date with the improvements
