Stronger Partnerships On Agenda For Mission To India

  • Tertiary and International Education Minister will lead a six-day mission to India
  • Visit to reaffirm Western Australia's education partnership with India, help grow the international education sector, and diversify the economy
  • Mission includes engagements with Indian Government Ministers and attending a major mining exhibition

Tertiary and International Education Minister Dr Tony Buti will lead an official mission to India this week as part of the State Government's plans to grow the international education sector and diversify the economy.

The six-day visit aims to strengthen education links by promoting the expertise in Western Australia's TAFE training sector and establishing a Centre of Excellence with key stakeholders in the resources sector and government.

The visit will provide a number of opportunities including further raising awareness of WA's strengths in international education to support attraction of international students, while also promoting collaborations in skills development through student and institutional pathways.

WA education providers continue to expand into the Indian market through offshore campuses and joint programs with Indian partners.

Meetings and activities will take place across New Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai, with both Australian and Indian Government Ministers in attendance.

The timing of the visit is significant, with the Government of India recently announcing an AUD$11 billion initiative to upgrade 1,000 public sector Industrial Training Institutes.

The visit will also promote First Nations businesses participating in the First Nations Business Mission, which is jointly facilitated by the Perth USAsia Centre and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia on behalf of the Australian Government. These initiatives will advance opportunities for WA companies in mining and mining equipment, technology, and services (METS).

While in Kolkata, Minister Buti will attend India's largest mining exhibition, IME 2025 (International Mining, Equipment and Minerals Exhibition), along with 18 WA companies.

IME 2025 presents an opportunity for the Minister to advocate for WA companies and the business opportunities they can offer the region, including strengthening international trade linkages for Western Australian First Nations businesses in mining and METS.

As stated by Tertiary and International Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

"This mission reinforces the Cook Government's commitment to further the expansion of local education providers into the Indian market, a goal which will benefit both of our regions.

"Western Australia has always maintained a strong relationship with India and growing the State's reputation can support the growth in the number of international students pursuing further studies in WA, helping to diversify our economy.

"India is also one of WA's most valued investment and trade partners with continued collaboration across multiple sectors.

"I am looking forward to also being able to promote WA's world-renowned mining companies at India's largest and most prestigious mining exhibition."
