Stronger Welfare Regulations For Man's Best Friend

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government has today released a position paper on strengthened Dog Welfare legislation, complemented by the launch of a new Veterinary Attraction Package to help attract and retain more Vets in Tasmania.

The position paper outlines proposed changes to the Dog Control Act 2000, the Animal Welfare (Dogs) Regulations 2016 and the Tasmanian Animal Welfare Guidelines for Dogs following overwhelmingly positive support during consultation early this year.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said these important reforms are crucial to the ongoing welfare of dogs in Tasmania.

"We've all heard the horror stories of malpractice in puppy farms," Minister Pearce said.

"It's downright unacceptable, and our Government says no more.

"These strengthened regulations are a big step forward to put an end to the puppy farms.

"Large-scale dog breeders will face tougher regulations, stronger control measures, and increased penalties for malpractice.

"I look forward to progressing these important reforms to better protect our pooches."

Meanwhile, the Tasmanian Government has invested $400,000 to establish a new Vet Attraction Package.

Led by the Veterinary Board of Tasmania, the package will deliver support for vets with child and family care needs, as well as support for fifth and final year vets to complete their placements in Tasmania, bringing the next generation of vets to our state.

"Anybody with a pet knows just how difficult it can be to get an appointment at the vet," Minister Pearce said.

"This new package aims to attract and retain more vets to Tasmania, easing pressure on the system and freeing up space for families.

"The package will be rolled out in three phases."

Applications for stage one of the attraction package are now open at https://nre.tas.gov.au/biosecurity-tasmania/animal-biosecurity/veterinary-board-of-tasmania/veterinary-attraction-and-retention-package-(varp)
