Supporting Stonnington to prepare for plastics ban

Since October 2022, we've been supporting Stonnington residents, businesses, community groups, sports clubs, and our own employees, to prepare for next month's Victorian Government's single-use plastics ban.

From 1 February 2023, these problematic single-use plastic items will be banned from sale or supply in Victoria:

  • cutlery
  • plates
  • drink stirrers
  • expanded polystyrene food and drink containers
  • cotton bud sticks
  • straws.

Single-use plastic items are a big problem. They litter our streets and waterways, harm wildlife, contaminate our food and water, and are difficult and costly to clean up. That's why we're leading the way in reducing, and eventually eliminating, the use of single-use plastics across our city.

Our Plastic Free Policy outlines our commitment to eliminate the use of single-use plastics across city operations and services, events, and, events held on our land and in our sites.

Our Plastic Free Stonnington Community Guidelines support those holding an event on our land and in our venues, to deliver a plastic-free event.

We've already delivered in-person workshops to community groups, sports clubs, CALD communities and our older adult community members, and will continue to provide education and support in 2023.

We've developed Internal Guidelines to support our employees to eliminate unnecessary single-use plastics from our operations, services, meetings and events.

We've also given Stonnington businesses a range of materials to support them and their customers to prepare for the ban.

Replacing single-use plastic waste with simple, convenient, reusable alternatives is easy! Together we can create change and make a difference, for a cleaner, greener, more sustainable Stonnington.
