Sydney Man Charged With Threatening Foreign Embassy

A Colyton man is expected to appear in Parramatta Local Court today (10 July 2026) charged over an alleged bomb hoax targeting a foreign embassy in Australia.

The AFP's National Security Investigations (NSI) team began an investigation in June 2026, after receiving a report from a foreign law enforcement partner of an online threat to harm a foreign embassy located in Australia.

Police linked the man, 47, to the alleged threat and executed a search warrant yesterday (9 July 2026) at a home in Colyton.

During the search warrant NSI investigators located and seized a mobile phone and approximately 2g of a white crystalline substance, suspected to be methamphetamine.

The man was arrested and charged with one count of using a carriage service to make a threat to cause serious harm, contrary to section 474.15(2) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

The maximum penalty for this offence is seven years' imprisonment.

AFP Detective Acting Inspector Joel Rivers said the AFP took seriously all threats made against diplomatic establishments.

"Embassies and consulates are locations of the highest importance and should be able to function without facing the threat of harm," Det A/Insp Rivers said.

"People should not assume they are anonymous online or beyond the AFP's reach. The AFP has the means to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought before the courts."

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including the targeting of the federal parliamentarians.
