Tanks Arts Centre Up for Top Regional Music Venue 2026

Cairns' home of live music, Tanks Arts Centre, has been nominated for Best Regional Music Venue in the 2026 Queensland Music Awards (QMAs) People's Choice Awards, and is calling on music lovers to help secure the win.

As the QMAs celebrate 20 years of championing Queensland music, Tanks' nomination places Cairns front and centre alongside standout North Queensland events such as the Tablelands Folk Festival and Savannah in the Round - proof the region punches well above its weight when it comes to live music.

Housed in World War II–era fuel tanks and set beneath the rainforest canopy of Mt Whitfield, Tanks Arts Centre is unlike any other venue in Queensland.

From intimate local gigs to national tours and global artists, Tanks has built a reputation for championing regional voices, backing emerging talent and delivering unforgettable live music experiences in a space that feels both iconic and deeply connected to community.

For artists and audiences alike, Tanks isn't just a venue - it's where North Queensland's music culture comes alive.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the nomination put Cairns firmly in the Queensland music spotlight.

"Being recognised alongside major festivals and venues across the state proves Cairns more than holds its own. Tanks Arts Centre showcases our city's creativity on a state and national stage," Cr Eden said.

"This nomination reflects the passion of the musicians, audiences and staff who make live music thrive in North Queensland."

In 2026, the QMAs return to Fortitude Music Hall on Wednesday 22 April, honouring excellence across blues, folk, pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, country, electronic and more, as judged by a panel of over 100 Australian and international music industry professionals.

Presented by The Music, People's Choice voting is now open across Festival of the Year, Regional Venue of the Year and Metro Venue of the Year.

Voting closes 30 January, with all voters in the draw to win a VIP QMAs experience, including premium seating and exclusive access.

If you've danced, discovered new music, or felt something special at Tanks, now's the time to vote and show your support for North Queensland live music.
