Tasmania needs industrial manslaughter laws

Tasmanian Labor

International Workers' Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have lost their lives at work and a day to fight to do better to protect the health and safety of current workers.

Tasmanian Labor strongly backs Unions Tasmania's renewed calls on the Rockliff Liberal Government to introduce industrial manslaughter laws in Tasmania.

Tasmania is the last jurisdiction in the nation to introduce these critical laws, which would greatly increase deterrence for employers not pulling their weight when it comes to ensuring safe workplaces.

Every worker deserves to come home safely, but with 87 work-related fatalities recorded in Tasmania over the past decade we sadly know this isn't always the case.

Tasmania can do much better in protecting the lives of workers, and the Rockliff Government needs to introduce industrial manslaughter laws to pull us in step with the rest of Australia.
