Tasmanian suppliers are set to benefit to the tune of about $30 million a year over the next 10 years under a supply arrangement for the new Antarctic research vessel, the RSV Nuyina.
As a state we are unique positioned – geographically and economically – to benefit from Antarctic business and the Tasmanian Liberal Government is working to ensure we capitalise on those opportunities.
The vessel, which will arrive on its maiden sailing into its home port of Hobart next month, will be supplied with provedoring services by Hobart-based Tasmanian Shipping Supplies.
I congratulate Tasmanian Shipping Supplies and its management for winning this important contract to supply goods and services for the RSV Nuyina, which will be a huge boost for local businesses.
From manufacturing to maintenance services and the supply of food, stevedoring and security, this is a great boost to the local economy.
Like all Tasmanians, I look forward to welcoming the RSV Nuyina to the Port of Hobart for the first time next month and I am sure Tasmanians will line the River Derwent to get a glimpse of the $1.91 billion vessel.
Tasmanian Shipping Supplies has a long and successful association with Australia's Antarctic and marine science shipping program and has also established a close association resupplied vessels associated with the French, Italian and Chinese programs.
I also congratulate Serco for its project management of the design and building of the RSV Nuyina and the strong ties it has established with the Tasmanian business sector.
