The first and only indoor swimming facility serving the entire southern beaches area is coming to life.
The Tasmanian Government is investing $1.5m in this important community infrastructure.
Acting Minister for Sport, Gavin Pearce, said the project has been nearly a decade in the making.
"I congratulate Luke Doerner's vision for this project, which was born entirely from the community need and personal determination," Minister Pearce said.
"Upgraded local facilities deliver the ability to further develop community partnerships and programs.
"These enhancements help more Tasmanians participate in sport and physical activity, which we know pays dividends in improvements to physical and mental health.
"This project ticks all the boxes in terms of high-quality, safe, inclusive and fit-for-purpose community sport and recreation infrastructure that will service almost 20,000 Southern Beaches residents."
The Southern Beaches Aquatic Centre will be a multi-use swim centre located in Dodges Ferry, featuring a 25-metre lap pool, café and allied health consulting rooms.
During the 2024 State Election, the Tasmania Liberal Government committed funding to support the completion of the Southern Beaches Swim Centre.
Minister for Local Government, Kerry Vincent, said he had backed this project from the beginning.
"As mayor of Sorell I was a strong advocate for the Southern Beaches Swim Centre, so to see the progress today now as Local Government Minister, has made me feel really proud," Minister Vincent said.
"This state-of-the-art aquatic centre will provide the municipality and its surrounding communities with a highly valuable and much-needed piece of infrastructure for this growing region.
"Facilities like this, driven by the local community, are what it's all about. This facility will really help local schools with their learning to swim campaigns as well.
"I can't wait to see this project delivered building a healthy and strong community."
The centre is currently under construction with completion anticipated in late June 2026 and the public opening planned for July 2026.
