Tasmania's Top Talent Competes at WorldSkills Australia

Felix Ellis, Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth

Tasmania's top apprentices and trainees are ramping up their preparation ahead of the WorldSkills Australia National Championships in Melbourne in August.

WorldSkills Australia National Championships is Australia's largest and most prestigious trade and skills showcase. It is held every two years and is the culmination of the WorldSkills regional competitions.

Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Felix Ellis, met with team member and up and coming plumbing star Kynan Manning at his workplace Kiely Plumbing in Ulverstone today.

"Kynan made the team by taking out the state title in the plumbing category at TasTAFE Claremont Campus," Minister Ellis said.

"Kynan shone in the State competition and is proof that our vocational education and training system is producing great apprentices and trainees, who will go on to become our fully-qualified tradies of the future.

"To have 13 young trainees and apprentices just like Kynan representing Tasmania at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships puts our vocational education and training system in the spotlight.

"Since the WorldSkills competitions began in 1981, Tassie has always punched well above its weight with much larger states and our results consistently outshine much bigger teams, notably even taking out the Evatt Shield for the top performing region four times out the past 11 championships."

Minister Ellis said the Government was proud to be able to give young people like Kynan the education and training they need for the future.

Following on from his success last October, Kynan is now set to take on the best from each state and territory with the hope of making the national team to head to the world championships in France.

"WorldSkills participants like Kynan are rightfully titled the country's best in their field and many return home from the competition with offers of employment, public recognition and a great sense of pride," Minister Ellis said.

"I know all of Tasmania will be right behind Kynan and the rest of the Tasmanian WorldSkills team as they go for gold and will back our VET system to match it with the best."

The national competition is a three-day event where more than 500 young people drawn from 34 regions across Australia come together to vie for the title of WorldSkills Australia National Champion in their chosen trade.

The formal announcement of WorldSkills Tasmania Team will be in May 2023.
