The Cook Labor Government has marked a significant milestone in Western Australia's conservation journey with the inaugural Statewide Joint Management Forum in Perth.
Joint management brings Traditional Owners and the State Government together to protect and manage WA's national parks and reserves, combining cultural knowledge and contemporary conservation practices to care for Country.
The two-day forum, which began on Tuesday, involves more than 160 Traditional Owner partner representatives, Aboriginal Rangers, and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) staff from across WA.
Co-designed by Traditional Owners and DBCA regional teams, it provides a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, discuss challenges and identify priorities to strengthen joint management across the State.
The forum highlights the significant growth of joint management with Traditional Owners across WA, with almost 40 per cent of the State's conservation estate now managed in partnership.
This growth has been accelerated by the Cook Labor Government's Plan for Our Parks initiative, which has created more than six million hectares of new conservation estate over the past six years.
Importantly, all new parks and reserves created through Plan for Our Parks are jointly or co-operatively managed with Traditional Owners, ensuring they play a central role in caring for Country.
