Teen Charged in Sydney CBD Machete Rail Attack

Police have charged a teenage boy following an alleged assault with a machete on the Sydney Light rail earlier this week.

About 10.30pm Tuesday (14 April 2026), emergency services responded to reports of an assault on a Light rail service at Town Hall on George Street, Sydney.

On arrival police were told two boys had allegedly assaulted a third boy – aged 15 – while on a tram before running from the scene prior to police arrival.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the 15-year-old at the scene for a stab wound to the left arm before taking him to hospital in a stable condition.

The light rail service was secured as a crime scene and taken to the Randwick depot where it was examined by specialist police.

Following extensive inquiries, about 8.20am today (Thursday 16 April 2026), detectives attached to Sydney City Police Area Command – with assistance from Inner West Police Area Command – attended a home in Newtown and arrested a 15-year-old boy, who police will allege is one of the two boys.

During the arrest, police located and seized a knife sheath from the home for forensic examination.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Children's Court tomorrow (Friday 17 April 2026).

Investigations to locate the second boy are continuing.
