Hundreds of Territorians are cutting their energy bills for good by installing a Cheaper Home Battery, with Darwin residents installing batteries at double the rate of Melbourne.
Nearly 700 households have taken up the offer of around 30 per cent off a home battery, allowing them to take control of their energy use and cut their bills for good, with residents of Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs, Humpty Doo and Katherine leading the charge.
Stored rooftop solar via batteries is good for the grid, playing an increasingly important role in helping households store more of their own cheap, clean solar energy for use at night and during periods of high demand - while reducing reliance on the grid, helping to drive down prices for everyone, and slashing bills for good.
Installing on average 20 new batteries a week, Territorians have added around 17 MWh of storage since the program commenced, or enough to power around 700 homes for a day.
Under the program, Australian households with existing rooftop solar can save up to $1,100 on their power bill every year.
Australians installing a new solar and battery system can save up to $2,300 a year - up to 90 per cent of a typical family electricity bill.
Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson:
"It's great to see Territorians embracing cheaper home batteries at such a rapid rate to make the most of the Territory's enviable solar potential.
"These batteries cut electricity costs for the people installing them and boost grid reliability across the electricity networks they're connected to.
"By generating and storing solar power, home batteries keep a lid on peak demand, which keeps a lid on system costs.
"And the more renewable generation and storage we add across the Territory, the more reliability we add to the grid."
Quotes attributable to Member for Solomon, Luke Gosling:
"We've got the sunshine, so it makes sense to use it and for families with rooftop solar, adding a battery can mean real savings.
"If you're putting in a new solar and battery system, you could save up to $2,300 a year, up to 90 per cent of a typical family power bill. That's a big help with the cost of living.
"We're backing families and strengthening our grid at the same time - driving record investment in renewables and batteries to deliver more affordable, more reliable power right here in the Territory."
