Territorians urged to recognise community heroes on Thank A First Responder Day
Chief Minister says first responders show best of Territory - grit, compassion and courage
Follows announcement NT Fire and Emergency Services to get its own dedicated headquarters at Nightcliff as CLP Government delivers safer communities
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has called on all Territorians to join her in thanking the remarkable men and women who put service first and stand ready to protect people and communities every day.
On Thank A First Responder Day 2026, Ms Finocchiaro said first responders are the heroes who rush to the scene when disaster strikes, lives are at risk, and communities need help.
"Whether responding to floods, bushfires, cyclones, storms, road crashes, search and rescue operations, medical emergencies or other critical incidents, they serve with courage, professionalism and unwavering dedication," the Chief Minister said.
"From emergency service volunteers in our remote communities to firefighters, emergency services personnel, police officers, paramedics, communications operators and support staff, our first responders are the backbone of community safety across the Territory.
"The grim reality is that Police, fire fighters and paramedics will often see more carnage in a week than other people will see in a lifetime. They show the best of the Territory spirit - grit, compassion, and courage."
She said Thank A First Responder Day was also an opportunity to recognise the many volunteers who give their time freely to help protect communities.
"The willingness of volunteers to step forward in times of need makes an extraordinary difference and strengthens the resilience of communities right across the Territory."
Ms Finocchiaro this week announced NT Fire and Emergency Services (NTFES) will get its own dedicated headquarters at Nightcliff as the CLP Government continues to deliver stronger and safer communities.
The Chief Minister said the facility at 53 Progress Drive would provide NTFES with a fit-for-purpose headquarters for the first time, including the capability to support emergency operations during critical incidents when required.
"These people are heroes and my government believes they deserve a proper home and that is what we are providing at Nightcliff," Ms Finocchiaro said.
"This investment recognises the vital role NTFES personnel and volunteers play in protecting lives, property and communities across the Territory."
