Think, shop and buy local on GlenGALA Day in Sunshine West

Community members are invited to GlenGALA Day on 17 April, at 10am-2pm to enjoy some fun activities, as part of the Sunshine West 20-Minute Neighbourhood activation program.

GlenGALA Day will be held at Glengala Village shops on Glengala Road, Sunshine West and will feature a range of fun activities, live music, a magician and giveaways that include a hamper full of local goodies valued at $200.

This is an initiative of the 20-Minute Neighbourhood program, which is funded by the Victorian Government and delivered by Brimbank City Council.

The 20-Minute Neighbourhood program seeks to encourage residents to shop locally to meet most of their daily needs including local services and facilities within a 20-minute walk, cycle or local public transport trip from home.

These everyday needs include schools, shops, meeting places, open spaces, cafes, doctors, community services and safe access to public transport. Events like GlenGALA Day showcase how our neighbourhoods can meet the needs of the local community.

The Sunshine West Glengala Village 20-Minute Neighbourhoods temporary activations project is an initiative overseen and funded (through a $120,000 grant) by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR) in partnership with Brimbank City Council.

Quotes to be attributed to Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic:

"Whether you live around Glengala Village, or visit nearby, come along and enjoy a fun filled day with your family and friends at the GlenGALA Day celebrations.

"The Glengala shopping strip has had a makeover to create a more inclusive, vibrant and healthy neighbourhood. The works include new outdoor seating and dining, landscaping, shopfront improvements and road art which is designed to reduce traffic speed.

"We've created something really special for residents and the local community that enhances the community space and fosters local pride.

"Supporting local business and residents is important to us, especially as we respond and recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

"The improvements are another way to encourage locals to think, shop and buy local and by doing so you're helping to build economic benefit and boost community spirit in your area.

"We've worked closely with local traders, Department of Transport, the TAC and community members to deliver a great outcome for the Sunshine West community, and hope everyone benefits from this amazing space."
