Third Mayoral ride takes in iconic coastline

Mayoral bike ride

Discover Newport and Williamstown's picturesque coastline with a unique bike ride through some of Hobsons Bay's most precious environments.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Jonathon Marsden is calling on cyclists, nature enthusiasts and the community at large to join him and Council's Conservation Rangers on the third Mayoral Bike Ride on Sunday 11 August to showcase Greenwich Bay, Point Gellibrand, the Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve and Rifle Range Reserve.

"I am excited to announce our third bike ride – one which allows several local community groups to share their wonderful environmental work with us," said Cr Marsden.

"We will start the ride at the Sandy Point Nature Reserve where the Friends of Greenwich Bay will talk about their love for the area, including plantings and litter control, before heading south to Williamstown along the Bay Trail.

"We then take a scenic ride along Williamstown's waterfront with its magnificent city views and historic buildings before taking a break at Shelly Beach with members of the Point Gellibrand Park Association.

"Then, past the Williamstown Cricket Ground and Williamstown Beach, we will arrive at the Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve and Rifle Range Reserve, where the Jawbone Marine Sanctuary Care Group, Friends of Williamstown Wetlands and Parks Victoria will talk about the importance of the area, as well as the work they are currently doing to preserve and protect it."

Riders will then retrace their route, returning along the Bay Trail to Sandy Point in a 13km round trip that will take about two hours to complete.

"This ride is a little longer than the previous two rides and while we would love all participants to stay the course, they are under no obligation to ride until the end," said Cr Marsden.

"Thirteen kilometres may sound far but on a bike and with several stops, it will be a nice relaxed ride with paved and flat terrain.

"I am proud to present the latest ride as part of my Mayoral program and I look forward to meeting you and showcasing our unique environment on a leisurely Sunday ride – so come along!"
