Three new name options received from Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation

We're so excited to announce Council has formally accepted and endorsed the three name options to proceed to municipal-wide community engagement.

These Woi-wurrung names have been provided through detailed research and careful consideration by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

They reflect the significance of Country and culture as well as honour the opportunity this name change represents as part of the reconciliation and healing journey.

The three Woi-wurrung words and their meaning in no order of priority are:

  • Wa-dam-buk (pronounced wa-dam-book) - meaning 'Renew'
  • Merri-bek (pronounced merri bek) - meaning 'Rocky country'
  • Jerrang (pronounced jerang) - meaning 'Leaf of tree'

You can rewatch the livestream from this morning on our page to view the historic moment.

We want everyone in the community to join the conversation. You can have your say on these names from early next week online. All residents and business owners will also receive a hardcopy survey in the mail soon.
